Support Local: The Focus is on Made-In-Canada
Many things have changed since spring 2020…
… and one of them is that Canadian customers are now paying more attention to where products are manufactured.
According to a recent survey conducted by Bromwich+Smith, Canadians are looking to make significant changes to their spending patterns once the lockdowns and restrictions are lifted.
One interesting finding of the survey is that out of the 1,510 people surveyed, 60% said they are looking to make a conscious effort to support small and local businesses.
It’s not just the consumers who are ‘supporting local’, federal and provincial governments are also championing this cause.
Recently, Grocery Business shared that the federal government is working on initiatives to bolster the strength of Canada’s food supply chain.
The government has invested billions of dollars into the country’s dairy, poultry, and egg farms.
This is a part of a bigger compensation package the government announced as part of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Under this program the government aims to:
- Provide direct payments to Canadian dairy farmers;
- And invest $692 million in 10-year programs for around 4,800 chicken, egg and turkey farmers.
In addition to providing support to local farmers, the government is also looking into ways to facilitate the manufacturing industry and enable them to continue operating during these challenging times.
The government has announced that it is expanding rapid testing availability for the sector. This means that Ontario’s 40,000 manufacturers and their 750,000 employees can continue to safely work and produce goods for both domestic and international consumption.
Alongside government organizations, other private and public entities are also launching initiatives to support Canadian companies.
Huffington Post Canada, for instance, has curated a list of local stores and independent online vendors that people can buy from to support Canadian businesses.
